About the Library of the Society of Jesus in South Africa

With the demise of St Aidan’s College and its very good library, some of the best Africana collection (e.g. Burchell’s Travels in Southern Africa and others) was stolen in the last years of the College, but some went up to Prestage House having been collected by Fr. Paddy Maloney, and some of the better remnants were collected and added to our 2 Sherwood Rd Community library. Later on, some of the Braamfontein community library was added to the Murray House Library. Some of the rarer and more valuable books were sent to the University of Johannesburg Library on permanent loan. The Community at Cedara built up a good collection of philosophy and theology with a good contribution from the personal library of Fr. George Edmonton. Over time this collection was supplemented by the personal collections of other Jesuits, e.g. Fr Jack Gillick SJ (Psychology), Fr Eddy Edmonstone SJ (Philosophy and Theology), Fr Anthony Egan SJ (Ethics, History and Politics). With the move to the new Community at Auckland Park, a dedicated site for the Library became possible and it is now managed by the Regional Superior.

Our current Librarian is Mr Francis Zvigo. He holds diplomas in Library and Information Science and Human Resources and is currently studying for his Bachelor of Theology. He has previously had 15 years of work experience at the Bulawayo Public Library and is now engaged in cataloging our collection.

Fr Matthew Charlesworth SJ is responsible for maintaining the technical aspects of the library, including this online public access catalogue which uses the latest version of Koha Library Software.
